Last spring, I created a series of soundscape transcriptions focused on the beautiful symphony emitted by our eastern spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer). I was so mesmerized by their choir that I carefully and respectfully trekked through many swamps to sit among their collective song. I managed to field-record many hours of sound data, which I excitedly brought home and played on a loop for hours while transcribing them onto paper using graphite and ink.
This Spring Peeper sound-transcription drawings was featured on the @ecologyaction cover this year — a moment of recognition that felt especially meaningful given the deep listening and fieldwork behind the piece.
Each winter, this tiny frog survives by slowing its heart rate to just a few beats per minute, entering a freeze-tolerant state where parts of its body literally turn to ice. And each spring, Pseudacris crucifer awakens our wetlands again with its piercing, hopeful call. What a beautiful, resilient little creature with a dynamic heart.
15% of proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Herpetological Society (https://canadianherpetology.ca/), who work to protect the fragile ecosystems these frogs — and so many others — rely on. Even if you’re not purchasing, I encourage you to explore and support their important mission.
